What's Mesh?

What is Meshtastic and Meshcore and what is it for? These are two of the main platforms of a fully independent messaging platform. Users can buy or build their own wireless devices and connect to each other using a mesh network, totally independent from the internet or cell phone coverage. But why?

One reason: it works when the Internet or phone lines do not, or where they can't reach. Another reason: it's fun to build your own devices, learn about radio antennas, and do it easily with cheap and available components. You can also buy prebuilt units for less than $35 USD. It's reminiscient of the early days of the Internet when connections were unreliable and access was limited to a simple interface and text output. And once you have a "node", it costs nothing to use.

Mesh Builds

Question: So you went through all this trouble to do something you can already do with a cell phone? Yep, that's about the long and short of it. But it was fun and I regret nothing.

The Basics:

• Node: A device you use to connect to the mesh
• Components: Chipset, Power, Antenna, Case
• Chipset: ESP32 or NRF5280. ESP32 is more power hungry, NRF is more efficient.
• Power: By battery or USB
• Antenna: Arguably the most important component. Get a quality one!
• Case: kind of optional, you can certainly put these all together and just leave them lying around
• Optional:
• Solar panel (optional)
• Screen (optional)
• Keyboard (optional)
